One of the laws on the toasted brick archives read:—"If any builder shall build or cause to be built a structure of which any portion shall fall during his lifetime, and injure an inhabitant—that builder shall be hanged by the neck"—or something like that. Friend Ham was a trifle harsh. He failed to rec¬ ognize that part of the responsibility should be laid at the door of the building materials used. Conse¬ quently they had occasional Polo Ground crowds saying farewell to the elected builders. Today we rightfully place some of the responsi¬ bility on the building materials themselves. Note the nonchalant expression on our represen¬ tative in the illustration. "He should, etc." The best builders of New York are just as care¬ ful as if old Hamurabi were still on the job—their care consists in the careful selection of all the ma¬ terials they require.
