The down-town cable station of tbe Broadway aurface railroad, at the

oorthweat corasr of Broadway and Houston street, is advancĩng toward
completion fairly well. Tbe second tier of iron beams is already in place,
although the raaBon-work faas not progressed beyond tfae street level. A
large force of raen, probably as large a Eorce aa could work on tbe buildiug
witfaout being in each others' way, is engaged on the atructure and it tooks
as though tbis statioo might be completed before tbe eud of November.
The part of this work whĩch tonk a good deal of time as well as a good deal
of money was theexcavation and the building of tbe foondations, wbich
are in sonie places as mucfa as 38 feet betow Ihe surface ef tbe street. Tbe
cabte works uuder Broadway at Houaton street, it may be remembered, are
33feet deep. Attheup-town cabte station, 50tb street and îtb avenue, a
large part of tbe macbinery is in place and work here will probably be
succesBfully completed before the dowo-town station is ready.

The Tfaird Avenue Cable Station, at tbe Bowery, Bayard and Elizabetfa
streets, is not getting on so well. Men are still at work excavating tfae
aandy soil at thisplaceand bracing tbe sidea of the immense faole witfa
stout beams, A goodly part of thu foundation has also been laid and
doubtless the superstructure wiU be erected very rapidty ouce tbe work on
it commences. It is to be hoped that matters on tfaese two roads will be
pusbed aarapidly as is cauipatibte withaafe construction, for their operation
ia going to be of immense banefit not onty to passengers but to property-
owners. Tbis will be eBpeciatly the case ou od avenue, some parts of which
have been atagoant of late years.

The prospectus of the Brooklyn lustitute of Arta and Sciences faas just
been issued. Commenoing ou October IHtb, eigbt ÍHustrated lectures will
be giveo on Architocture. Tfae lecturers include Prof. A. D. F. Hamlin, of
Cotumbia College, wbose subject wiil be "The Architectureof tfae World's
Fair Buildings:" Barr Ferree on "Arcfaitectural Probtemí in Great Cities;"
Prof. William R, Ware on tbe " Homan Forum ;" Kuíselt Sturgis, presi-
dent of tfae Architecbural League, on " Tbe Relation between the Facades

lecture on " Four Typea of Arcfaitecture, as Illustrated by Pour Cities,
Oxford, Rouen, Nuremburg and Venice."
