sociation will hold a mass meeting on Monday
evening. May 10. at S p. m. at the Hotel Ma¬
jestic Central Park West and 72d st. to protest
against the Direct Tax measure, now m the
hands of the Governor for disposition.
THE MUNICIPAL CIVIL SERVICE COM¬
MISSION has ordered an examination to take
place in tbe near future for Deputy Tax Com-
misiouers, whose duties are to assess the value
of real and personal property for the purpose of
taxation. All men who have had five years ex¬
perience in the real estate business are eligible.
THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Metropolitan
League of Savings and Loan Associations will be
held in the offices of the Atlantic Association,
:yn Court st Brooklyn, tonight at 8 p. m. Of¬
ficers and three trustees, whose terms expire, are
to be elected. There will be talks on the Land
Bank and on other measures in the line of sav¬
ing and loan expansion in this section.

OBITUARY
JOSEPH A. GOULDEN, Bronx Congressman
and general agent in this city for the Pennsyl¬
vania Life Insurance Co.. with offices at 180
Broadway, died suddenly in Philadelphia, on
Monday. He was born in 1844 and was a veteran
of the Civil War. He was for many ycars in¬
terested in Bronx civic and political affairs and
was the first president of the Taxpayers" Alli¬
ance of the Bronx.
