The Court of Appeals have declared the act of 1900, Intended to
suppress the garbage reduction works on Barren Island, uncon¬
stitutional, thereby sustaining the opinion of the Court at Special
Term,
The long-desired improved connection across Nev^town Creek
with the Hunter's Point district of Queens is thought "within
sight by the approval of the issue of $644,000 bonds for the
Vernon Av Bridge by Mayor "Van Wyck this vi-eek. The
bridge is to run from Vernon av. Queens, across Newtown
Creek to Manhattan av, this borough. The present structure
was declared unsafe ten years ago. The old city of Brooklyn
airthorized the construction of a bridge several years before
consolidation, but the authorization was null because of a tech¬
nicality. When the present city government took hold of affairs
the Aldermen got into a row over the question of whether the
bridge should be a high level or low level.
Corporation Counsel Whalen has given the city an opinion to
the effect that Fulton pl is a public, and not a private, street. He
says that it has been treated as a public thoroughfare for 25
The new ferry from the foot of Bi'oadway, Williamsburg, to
42a st, Manhattan, â– ^'111 be put in operation early in July. New
ferry houses and slips are being built on both sides of the
river. The new ferry will establish direct connection for pas-
se.iger traffic with the Grand Central Station and the West Shore
Railroad at the foot of West 42d st. In addition to a through
ticket and express service there will be a cab service from the
Williamsburg entrance of the ferry to the Grand Central Depot,
