ings, warehouses, schools, public buildings, rail¬
way structures, car barns and power plants.
GLOBE AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER COM¬
PANY, 47 West 34th street, has obtained the
contract for the automatic sprinkler equipment
for the new Equitable Building. The sprinkler
system, CO vers kitchen, store-rooms, etc., in¬
cluding parts of several stories and three base¬
ments. The sprinklers on tbe 86th story are
supplied trom a steel gravity tank on the SSth
story; those on the 8d story are supplied from
two steel pressure tanks 45 tt. long in the same
story; the sprinklers on the flrst floor and the
several basements are supplied by two 4-inch
connections from the street mains.
OBITUARY
JOHN H. LEITH, general contractor, builder
of a number of high class apartments on the
u^per West Side of Manhattan, died suddenly of
heart disease at Pleasant Valley, N. Y., Tues¬
day, April 14. He was born in Landon fifty-
two years ago and had lived for a number of
years at 150 Wilson av. Flushing, L. I. He is
survived by his widow and two daughters.
ALFRED NOBLE, a distinguished engineer
who specialized in railroad, tunnel and canal
work, died at St. Luke's Hospital, N. Y. C,
Sunday, April 10. He was born in Michigan,
August 7, 1844, and was graduated -from tho^
University ot Michigan in 1870. During the-
Civil War he served in the Army of the Poto¬
mac tor three yeara. Mr. Noble has served on
many importapt hoarda and commiasioQs, heing
active on the Nicaragua Canal Board In 1895.
the U. S. Board of Bngineera on Deep Water¬
ways in 1899-1900, and on the Isthmian Canal
Commission from 1899 to 1908, He came to
New York City in 1902 and was chief engineer
in charge of the East River tunnels for the
Pennsylvania and Long Island Railroads. He
was an honorary member of the Institute of
Civil Engineers of Great Britain, was presi¬
dent of the Western Society ot Engineers in
1897 and of the American Society of Civil En¬
gineers in 1903,
