The following semi-annual Index of the Con¬
veyances and Projected Buildings in New York
and Kings Counties, as pubbslied in The Record
AND Guide dm-ing the last six months of 1888,
will be found of gi'eat value to those of oui- sub¬
scribers who have preserved all the issues of this
paper dui-ing that period, The utmost care has
been taken to keep the Index up to the same p'ji-
fect standard which has characterized it in the
past. The pages are given on which all the ti-ans-
fers of realty published in Volume XLII. can
-immediately be found, aud the streets and avenues
are so sub-divided that very few references are
required. Foi- instance, transfers o"' property on
the Boulevard appear in ten issues during the
six mouths, which in the Index is sub-divided
into six parts, so that the least possible
trouble need be incurred, any transfer being
found by referring to three pages at the most,
provided it is known between what streets or
avenues the property is located. Although many
of our subscribers have used the Index for years,
some of them do not fully understand the com¬
pleteness of the work. We ai-e frequently told of
errors that our readers i/i/iiA: they have discov¬
ered, which, upon investigation, proveto be errors
of the searcher—not of the Index. For instance,
in the cm'rent munber appears the follo\ring:
135th street, n s, from 5tb to Lenox avenue, 935,
12,57, 1424 and 1545, the latter being the jjages on
which transfers on said street may be found.
Now, turning to page 1545 the average searcher
would fail to find the item referred to, because it
does not appear in the numerical order of streets,
A close search shows the item under the head of
Lenox avenue, where a plot 99.1! x435 is conveyed.
The Index is, therefore, in some cases condemned
for a supposed omission which is really the
strongest evidence of the thoroughness with
which it has been compiled. Where such an
omission should occasionally seem apparent to
the subscriber, he shoidd search the whole page,
and he will then find the item which is referred
to. The Pro.iected Buildings are indexed m a
similar manner, so that it can readily be ascer¬
tained on what streets improvements have been
made. Those wishing to keep a file for perma¬
nent reference should see that all the immbers
are complete and have them bound. A suitable
