REAL ESTATE EECOED.
lies in a suppression of the facts. In the last number
I have seen of tha two leading lumber papers, in the
editorial remarks one of them is goin^ ' to inquire
into the facts," which is certainly an admirable tning
to do after having written ahnost eii6ugh to fill a
quarto volume on the subject, while the other "tlirows
his paper open for the discussion of the subject from
aU sides," as if it were not the busmess of these jour¬
nals to know somethmg of the interest they are sup¬
posed to represent. But the truth is that it is not con¬
sidered in the interest of their patrons to give a true
statement of the facts, and it would be simply an in¬
sult to the inteUigence of either of the gentlemen
editing these papers to imagine that they have not
known the facts for a long time, or that they do not
knov/ the absurdity of a great deal of the rub'bisli tha,t
gets a place in their columns.
The question is one of too great moment to be trifled
with any longer, for surely it is of importance to
know, as near as possible, how long the forests of
that portion of Canada and the United States north
of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi rivers, whicli
now supply nine-tenOis of the sa^vn timber of Tlmer-
ica, and two-thirds of that of the whole M'orld, can
stand the present enormous drain on their resources,
■V\Tien this question is settled it wU be time enough to
take up the important inquiry as to v>'hy people, who
have biUs to pay, seU then- property for just the best
price they can get; and the stUl more momentous
one of the relationship existing between the writer
and Mr. James Little, of Montreal.
I am. Sir, Your obedient servant,
Wiluam Little.
NAILS,—The market has been less active. In a
few cases certain favorite makes still meet with a
very good distribution, but the general movement has
fallen" off as compared with the opening of the month.
Manufacturers, however asic former rates, aud are
endeavoring to work the production down
in proportion to the reduced call. We quote: lOd.
to 60d,. common fence and sheathing ^3 keg,
$3.10; 8d. and 9d., common do., ^ keg, $3.35; 6d. and
7d., common, ^ keg, $3,60 ; 4d. and 5d.. common do..
^ keg, $3.85; 3d. aud4d., Ught. ^^. keg, $4,60; 3d., fine;
^ ktg, $5,35; 2d,, ^ keg, $5,35. Cut spikes, all sizes,
§3.35, Floor, casin.g and box, 75c, above the same
sizes of conunon. Finishing, $1 above, and fine finish¬
ing $1,25 above.
CLINCH nails.
1% to ly in. 2 & 234 in- "y & m iu. 3 in. & longer.
$5.35 $5.10 $4,85 $4.60^ keg.
OILS.—The general demand continues about the
same, a few odd lots being taken as thej- became
necessary to satisfy early wants, but buyers refusing
to lay in any very liberal supplies. Holders, how¬
ever, are gi-owiug firmer and more confident
and many look for higher rates. We quote:
Linseed, about 63@65c, <p gallon; lard, 70@75c.
forNo. 1, and85@$1.00for present made; olive, $1,25
@1,35; ci-ude cottonseed, 40®41c; and refined summer
yellow do.. 48@50c.
PAINTS.—A very good business is stiU doing among
the leading jobbing houses, and a steady healthy
tone reported for [the general run of stock. The de¬
mand continues to be confined in the main to the
standard descriptions, and in some cases the accu¬
mulation of these has run down both on the foreign
and domestic accumulation, but as a rule selections
can be made without great difficulty. Sales include
white lead, at 103^@10?^c, for B,:B. ground; Orange
mineral at ll^c; Venetian red, $1.85 for Cookson's;
whiting at 50c, for common, aind 75c, for GUders;
RocheUe ochre at $1,50: Bei-muda, do,, IJ^c; Carmine
at $5 gold, aud Western glue in lots at ,8@17c currency
a little flne at 20@-23c.
TAR AND PITCH.—The markets have been quiet
and steady for both at abont former rates,
SPIRITS TURPENTINT:,—The regular trade de¬
mand and occasional export orders continue to afford
the principal outlet for stocks, and in no case does it
appear possible to hurry the movements of buyers.
Supplies, however, are smaU, and prices in conse¬
quence rule firmly. We quote at 37@39c. according
to quantity.
CONVEYANCES.

ceded by the name of the grantee, they mean as follows:
Ist—Q. C. is an abbreviation for Quit Claim deed,
1. e., a deed in which all the right, title and interest of
the grantor is conveyed, omitting all covenants or ivar-
ranty.
